Recent forecasts from the National Weather Service and other models indicate a moderating trend for Chicago on September 5, with highs most likely in the low to mid-80s as northeasterly flow replaces the recent heat wave that produced 95–96°F readings early in the month. This shift, combined with potential lake-breeze effects near official stations, supports the market’s emphasis on 82–83°F and 80–81°F outcomes. Key variables include the precise strength and timing of onshore winds, which can suppress maxima by several degrees near the lake, variable cloud cover or scattered showers that limit daytime heating, and model spread in boundary-layer moisture. Historical September 5 averages near 80°F provide context, while the short lead time leaves room for revisions from updated model runs.
