Recent July 2026 CPI data showing a 3.0% year-over-year increase—driven primarily by a 25.7% surge in gasoline prices amid Middle East geopolitical tensions—has reinforced trader positioning around the 2.5–2.9% band for Canada’s full-year average inflation rate, with that outcome holding the highest implied probability at 36%. Core measures tracked by the Bank of Canada remain anchored near 2%, limiting pass-through from energy shocks, while subdued GDP growth and the central bank’s steady 2.25% policy rate signal expectations that headline pressures will moderate through year-end. Government and private forecasts, including those from the Bank of Canada’s July Monetary Policy Report, project convergence toward the 2% target by 2027, supporting the market’s consensus that the annual average will avoid both sub-2% disinflation and renewed upside above 3.5%. Key upcoming catalysts include the August CPI release and September BoC meeting, which could shift probabilities if energy prices or labor market data deviate from current trends.
