Recent Middle East tensions have driven oil prices back toward $100 per barrel, elevating euro-area headline inflation and prompting upward revisions to 2026 projections. Following the ECB’s June 25-basis-point hike that set the deposit rate at 2.25 percent, President Lagarde and Governing Council members have highlighted upside risks from energy pass-through and second-round effects. Futures markets and analyst surveys now assign an 80-94 percent probability to another 25-basis-point increase at the September 9-10 meeting, with limited evidence yet of broader wage pressures that might alter the path. This consensus reflects the bank’s data-dependent stance and the absence of offsetting growth or disinflation signals since the July hold.

Increases or decreases of less than 25 bps will be rounded to 25 bps (e.g. an increase or decrease of 10 bps would be considered to be an increase or decrease of 25 bps). Increases or decreases of greater than 25 bps will be rounded to the nearest 25 bps and will be rounded away from 0 in cases of equidistance (e.g., an increase or decrease of 37.5 bps would be considered to be an increase or decrease of 50 bps). Displayed options of “Increase” or “Decrease” will include policy rate increases or decreases of any size.
If the specified meeting is postponed to a date and time before the start of the next scheduled meeting, this market will resolve based on the outcome of that postponed meeting.
