**Recent Canadian CPI prints have hovered near 3% year-over-year through mid-2026, driven primarily by elevated gasoline prices tied to the Middle East conflict, while measures excluding gasoline and core inflation have remained close to the Bank of Canada’s 2% target.** The BoC’s July Monetary Policy Report projected headline inflation easing to around 2.5% over the second half of 2026 as oil prices moderate along the futures curve and refinery margins narrow, with a return to target by early 2027. July data showed a 3.0% reading, slightly hotter than some expectations but consistent with the energy-driven pattern, and the central bank has held the policy rate steady at 2.25% while signaling it will look through transitory effects provided spillovers stay contained. Market-implied odds favoring the 2.5–2.9% annual outcome reflect trader consensus around this baseline path, tempered by upside risks from ongoing geopolitical tensions and potential U.S. tariff impacts on growth and prices. The next CPI release and October Monetary Policy Report will provide key updates on whether energy pressures broaden or dissipate as assumed.
