Incumbent Republican Mike Flood secured the nomination unopposed in the May 2026 primary for Nebraska’s 1st Congressional District and faces Democrat Chris Backemeyer in the November general election. The district’s eastern Nebraska footprint, encompassing Lincoln and surrounding counties, has delivered consistent Republican margins in recent cycles, including Flood’s 2024 victory. Early polling from May showed Flood ahead by single digits, reflecting limited Democratic momentum and the retirement of the more competitive NE-02 incumbent elsewhere in the state. Cook Political Report rates the seat Likely Republican, consistent with trader consensus reflecting the district’s partisan baseline, Flood’s incumbency, and absence of major late-breaking shifts in candidate positioning or external events.
