Voters in Washington state will decide in November 2026 on Initiative Measure No. IL26-638, which would bar students defined as biologically male from girls’ K-12 school sports teams and require sex verification through medical exams or testing. The measure, backed by Let’s Go Washington and similar efforts in Arizona and Colorado, overrides current WIAA policy allowing participation consistent with gender identity. Competitive odds near 50 percent reflect divided public sentiment on fairness in female athletics versus inclusion and privacy concerns, with opponents highlighting potential for invasive checks on all athletes and legal risks. Recent signature qualification and campaign framing around biological eligibility have balanced early momentum, while Democratic-leaning statewide trends, turnout patterns, and any late legal or endorsement shifts could alter the outcome before election day.
