**Market-implied odds for an AI industry downturn by December 31, 2026 remain moderate, reflecting persistent hyperscaler capital expenditure exceeding $1 trillion combined in 2025-2026 alongside mixed signals on returns.** Warnings from the Bank for International Settlements in June and subsequent notes from Fitch and Macquarie highlighted classic bubble traits—rapid debt-funded infrastructure buildout, electricity and chip constraints, and valuations near dot-com peaks—yet actual triggers such as a 50% Nvidia drop, major supplier collapses, or OpenAI/Anthropic bankruptcy have not materialized. Usage metrics show strong growth, with Google reporting hundreds-fold increases in tokens processed, while semiconductor and hyperscaler shares experienced rolling corrections without broad collapse. Traders weigh these sustained investments and cloud revenue gains against uncertain productivity payoffs and cheaper open-weight alternatives, anticipating resolution hinges on upcoming earnings and further infrastructure reports rather than immediate bust conditions.
