The Bank of Canada’s September 2 decision to hold the overnight rate at 2.25% for a seventh straight meeting reflects the primary driver of current market-implied odds, as recent data aligned with the July forecast amid offsetting risks. Headline CPI has hovered near 3% due to elevated gasoline prices from the Middle East conflict, lifting upside inflation risks, while core measures remain close to 2% with limited pass-through. At the same time, new U.S. tariffs and stalled trade talks have increased downside growth uncertainty, reinforcing the view that the current policy rate—near the lower end of the estimated neutral range—remains appropriate. With the next Monetary Policy Report due alongside the October 28 announcement, traders see limited scope for a 25-basis-point move in either direction before fresh projections clarify the path.
