The 2026 Alaska gubernatorial primary on August 18 features a crowded nonpartisan top-four format, with the four highest vote-getters advancing to a ranked-choice general election. Incumbent Mike Dunleavy is term-limited, opening the race to 17 candidates including Democrats Tom Begich and Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, Republicans such as Click Bishop, Dave Bronson, Adam Crum, Bernadette Wilson, and Edna DeVries, plus independents like Bill Walker. Early polling from spring showed Begich ahead but with support below 25 percent amid broad fragmentation, while candidate forums and early voting in early August have highlighted competing priorities on fiscal policy, energy costs, and education funding. The tight market pricing reflects vote-splitting risks across parties and the absence of a dominant frontrunner, with separation likely hinging on turnout patterns and any final-week endorsements or regional mobilization in the coming days.
