Abiy Ahmed’s commanding position in the market reflects his Prosperity Party’s landslide victory in Ethiopia’s June 2026 parliamentary elections, securing roughly 438 of 501 contested seats and a clear majority to form the next government. The legislature is scheduled to reconvene in October and formally reelect him to another five-year term under the current parliamentary system. Traders view this outcome as highly probable given the party’s dominance, the fragmented opposition, and limited participation in conflict-affected regions such as parts of Amhara, Oromia, and Tigray. Potential shifts could arise from unexpected health developments, major security escalations that fracture ruling-party unity, or successful constitutional changes creating an executive presidency that alters selection procedures, though these remain secondary to the confirmed electoral mandate.
