This market will resolve according to the number of natural volcanic eruptions with a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of 4 or higher between January 1 and December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. The primary resolution source will be the Smithsonian Institution Global Volcanism Program (GVP: https://volcano.si.edu/), specifically the cumulative figures for 2026 for VEI 4, VEI 5, and VEI 6 released on the page currently titled "Eruptions Avg 2000-2024 (N/T)" (https://volcano.si.edu/faq/index.cfm?question=eruptionsbyyear) as of March 31, 2027, 12 PM ET. Any prior updates will not be considered finalized. If this dataset has not been updated to include all relevant events by March 31, 2027, or if the Smithsonian GVP becomes permanently unavailable, this market may resolve based on a consensus of credible scientific sources, including the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), national or regional volcanic observatories, or credible reporting of a scientific consensus. Note: Smithsonian Institution Global Volcanism Program databases, which include eruptions that reached the relevant threshold prior to this market’s timeframe (e.g., https://volcano.si.edu/faq/index.cfm?question=eruptionsbyyear&checkyear=2025), will not be considered.**Trader consensus on Polymarket strongly favors zero VEI ≥4 eruptions for all of 2026 (57.5% implied probability), with one event at 24.5% and two or more far lower.** This positioning reflects the low global baseline rate of such events—typically zero to two per year on average, based on Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program records—and the absence of any confirmed VEI ≥4 activity through mid-August 2026. As of the latest monitoring, 47 volcanoes have shown confirmed eruptive activity in 2026, but these remain mostly low-intensity or ongoing effusive/Strombolian events without reaching the VEI 4 threshold (plume heights of ~10–25 km or ejecta volumes of 0.1–1 km³). Notable unrest, such as energetic explosions at Sheveluch (Russia) in May or activity at Fuego (Guatemala) and Dukono (Indonesia), has not produced the sustained column heights or tephra volumes required for VEI 4 classification according to official reports. Key scientific drivers include the inherent rarity and unpredictability of large explosive eruptions, which depend on magma chamber pressurization, volatile content, and conduit conditions that rarely align for VEI ≥4 events. With roughly four-and-a-half months remaining, the probability of one or more such eruptions occurring before year-end remains modest but non-zero, particularly if unrest escalates at high-risk systems. Upcoming weekly volcanic activity reports from the Smithsonian and national observatories will provide the next updates on any intensifying activity that could shift market-implied odds.
