The tight Hualien County magistrate race stems from a fragmented field ahead of the November 28, 2026 local elections, with the Kuomintang's March nomination of Yu Shu-chen facing challenges from party rivals including Chang Chun and Yeh Yao-hui who contested the internal process. Multiple independents such as Wei Chia-hsien and others have entered, diluting support in a county where the incumbent is term-limited and local factions remain active. Recent KMT candidate rallies have not produced clear separation, leaving trader consensus clustered near even odds as no single contender has consolidated broad backing. Upcoming candidate registration and any shifts in party endorsements or local polling could alter positioning before the vote.
