Hong Kong’s August rainfall is driven primarily by the East Asian summer monsoon and frequent tropical cyclone passages, which can deliver 100–300 mm in single events and push monthly totals well above the long-term mean of roughly 450–510 mm. A strengthening El Niño, with Niño 3.4 anomalies already exceeding +2 °C in mid-July 2026 and forecasts for a very strong event, has raised trader expectations of an active typhoon season capable of steering multiple systems toward the South China Sea. The Hong Kong Observatory’s August–October outlook nevertheless assigns the highest probability to near-normal rainfall, reflecting model consensus on only modest monsoon enhancement. Early-month model runs and the absence of immediate landfall threats have so far kept implied odds for the 700 mm+ bin at 51.5 %, while the cluster of outcomes near 425–550 mm remains competitive pending the first major forecast updates from the National Hurricane Center and HKO.

If the reported data falls exactly between two brackets, this market will resolve to the higher bracket.
The resolution source for this market will be the Hong Kong Observatory, specifically the "Total Rainfall (mm)" figure for all days in August 2026 under the "Daily Extract" at the https://www.weather.gov.hk/en/cis/climat.htm link once figures are finalized for the specified range.
If the relevant data is not available by November 7, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, another credible resolution source will be chosen.
The resolution source for this market measures precipitation to 1 decimal place (e.g., 1.5), thus, this is the level of precision that will be used when resolving this market. Any revisions to precipitation recorded after data is finalized for this market's timeframe will not be considered for this market's resolution.
