Below-normal forecasts for the 2026 Atlantic season, driven by a developing El Niño and elevated vertical wind shear, underpin the strong market-implied odds against any Category 4 hurricane making U.S. landfall. NOAA’s August update projects just 0–2 major hurricanes (Category 3+ on the Saffir-Simpson scale) amid 7–13 named storms total, while Colorado State University assigns only a 16% probability of at least one major U.S. landfall—well below the long-term 43% average. Activity remains subdued so far, with only weak tropical storms Arthur, Bertha, and Cristobal forming and no hurricanes recorded. Peak-season conditions through September could still shift, yet model consensus and historical analogs under similar ENSO patterns reinforce trader expectations of limited intensification and landfall risk before year-end.

This market will resolve to "Yes" if any storm makes landfall in the conterminous United States as a Category 4 hurricane, as reported in official National Hurricane Center advisories (https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/archive/2023/IDALIA.shtml?) between market creation and December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. This market may resolve based on the initial advisory released by the NHC for whether any storm has made landfall in the conterminous United States at Category 4 strength, regardless of any later retraction or analysis that may contradict the initial qualifying announcement. However, subsequent corrections or updates will be considered if they indicate a qualifying incident.
