In May 2026, reports indicated Iran had signaled willingness to relinquish or dilute its highly enriched uranium—described by some officials as “nuclear dust”—in exchange for sanctions relief, though preferences leaned toward on-site dilution under IAEA oversight rather than physical transfer abroad. Earlier February 2026 statements from Oman noted an agreement to avoid future stockpiles altogether. June 2025 U.S.-Israeli strikes damaged key sites, leaving portions of the stockpile inaccessible or buried, while subsequent IAEA reports through June 2026 showed limited changes and ongoing verification gaps. An MOU framework and renewed talks have kept diplomacy active into mid-2026, with upcoming IAEA board meetings and bilateral contacts likely to shape any final commitments on stockpile disposition.
