Taiwan's divided government continues to shape prospects for Premier Cho Jung-tai, who leads a DPP minority cabinet appointed by President Lai Ching-te in 2024 amid an opposition-controlled Legislative Yuan. Repeated opposition motions, including calls for his resignation over a July 2026 cooking oil contamination case and a salary freeze approved for September through December 2026, highlight ongoing friction from budget disputes and the December 2025 refusal to countersign revenue allocation legislation. No no-confidence vote has succeeded, and Cho remains in office as of early September 2026 while advancing defense spending, energy transitions, and tariff negotiations. Upcoming local elections in November and further budget reviews could intensify pressure or stabilize his position depending on legislative dynamics.
