Abiy Ahmed's commanding position in the market stems from his Prosperity Party's decisive victory in Ethiopia's June 2026 general election, securing a large parliamentary majority that positions the incumbent to retain the premiership when the new House of Peoples' Representatives selects the prime minister later this year. Ongoing security challenges in regions including Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia, along with diplomatic frictions, have not altered the ruling party's dominance in the legislature. Traders price in continuity based on this institutional control and historical patterns of incumbent re-selection. Potential shifts could arise from unforeseen internal party dynamics, health-related developments, or major escalations in regional conflicts that prompt leadership adjustments before formal confirmation.
