Trader consensus heavily favors no 9.0+ earthquake before 2027 at 93.7% implied probability, driven by the extreme rarity of such great events and the absence of elevated seismic signals through mid-2026. USGS records confirm only a handful of magnitude 9.0+ quakes since 1900, with annual base rates estimated at 6-12% globally; 2026 activity has remained typical or below average, featuring a maximum of 7.8 and no foreshock sequences or strain accumulation patterns indicating imminent megathrust rupture on monitored subduction zones. Recent model runs and monitoring data show no deviation from historical norms that would justify revising these low odds. A realistic challenge could emerge from rapid, unexpected slip along high-risk segments such as Cascadia or the Nankai Trough, though short-term forecasts assign minimal probability to this outcome before year-end.

The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/browse/significant.php#sigdef).
If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until January 31, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.
After a qualifying earthquake is registered, this market will remain open for 24 hours to account for any revisions to its recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data.
