Republican incumbent John McGuire's decisive primary victory and the district's established partisan lean anchor trader expectations for a GOP hold in Virginia's 5th Congressional District. McGuire defeated his Republican challenger by a wide margin in the August 4 primary, while former Representative Tom Perriello secured the Democratic nomination. The seat, which Trump carried by roughly 12 points in 2024 and McGuire won with 57 percent that cycle, retains its current court-drawn boundaries after redistricting changes were invalidated. Cook Political Report rates the race Solid Republican, reflecting limited competitive pressure and McGuire's fundraising and name recognition advantages heading into the November general election.
