The S&P 500 closed at 7,652.86 on August 24, 2026, down 0.28% and roughly 1.9% below its August 13 record of 7,798.99, amid elevated geopolitical tensions over potential U.S. sanctions on Iran and its trade partners. Traders are pricing in volatility from Nvidia’s earnings release later in the week, July PCE inflation data, and Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole remarks, which could influence expectations for monetary policy amid sticky inflation and high long-term Treasury yields. Corporate earnings growth remains robust, with S&P 500 constituents reporting strong profit expansion year-to-date, though recent weakness in technology and semiconductor names has weighed on the index. Year-to-date gains stand near 11.8%, supported by AI-driven fundamentals but tempered by bond market pressures and Middle East risks.
