Recent volatility in the iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (EWY), trading near $177–180 as of late August 2026 after a sharp July correction in the KOSPI, stems primarily from heavy exposure to AI-linked semiconductors such as Samsung and SK Hynix. Global chip demand, foreign institutional flows, and KRW movements against the dollar remain key drivers, while margin deleveraging and valuation resets created pronounced swings earlier in the summer. The week of August 24 features U.S. data releases including core PCE inflation, consumer confidence, and GDP revisions, alongside the Jackson Hole symposium, which could shift rate expectations and risk appetite for emerging-market equities. These events will likely determine short-term price thresholds amid ongoing sensitivity to monetary policy signals.
