Recent record highs in the S&P 500 near 7,800, with SPY closing at 765.72 on August 21, reflect momentum from softer-than-expected July CPI and PPI readings that eased concerns over near-term Federal Reserve rate hikes. Year-to-date gains of roughly 14% have been supported by resilient corporate earnings, particularly in technology, alongside stable policy rates in the 3.50-3.75% range. For the week of August 24, key catalysts include the Chicago Fed National Activity Index, consumer confidence data, new home sales, and especially the core PCE inflation release—the Fed’s preferred gauge—which could shift rate expectations and equity valuations. Treasury yields and labor market indicators will also influence short-term price action amid ongoing monetary policy uncertainty.
