August nonfarm payrolls rose 162,000 while the unemployment rate held at 4.1%, supporting a stable labor market that reduces urgency for easing. July PCE inflation registered 3.7% overall and 3.3% core—well above the 2% goal—while upcoming September 11 CPI data will shape positioning ahead of the September 15–16 FOMC meeting, which includes updated dot-plot projections. Market-implied odds, reflected in fed funds futures, have shifted toward possible hikes rather than cuts this year, underscoring how incoming inflation prints and central bank communications drive the current consensus.
