The preliminary University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index for September 2026 printed at 47.8, below consensus forecasts near 51 and marking the second consecutive monthly decline from August’s final 51.7. Heightened fuel prices, ongoing trade tensions, and broader cost-of-living pressures drove the drop, pushing one-year inflation expectations up to 4.6 percent—the highest since June—while the expectations sub-index fell sharply to 45.8. These developments have concentrated trader-implied probabilities on the 46.0–48.9 bucket at 68.5 percent, consistent with historical revision patterns ahead of the September 25 final release. Persistent geopolitical risks and elevated energy costs continue to weigh on household views, limiting scope for meaningful upside in the final print while keeping downside risks contained near current levels.
