Brett Whiteley holds the leading trader consensus at 61.5% for the October 27, 2026, Latrobe Council mayoral election in Tasmania, ahead of incumbent Peter Freshney at 18.3% and numerous other candidates at flat 50% levels. Whiteley, a former federal Liberal MP for Braddon and state MP who lives in the municipality, benefits from strong name recognition and prior local government experience as a Burnie alderman. Freshney, who has served as mayor since 2014, faces pressure from ongoing council leadership tensions and public criticism, including a reported five-year campaign against the council that affected his position; he had signaled uncertainty about running again by early 2026. Nominations remain open until September 21, leaving the field fluid and contributing to broad uncertainty around other contenders ahead of the Tasmanian local government polls.
