This market will resolve according to the total number of earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.0 or higher that occur anywhere on Earth between January 1 and December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/browse/significant.php#sigdef). If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until January 7, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.As of mid-August 2026, roughly 10–11 magnitude 7.0+ earthquakes have occurred worldwide, placing the year on pace with the long-term USGS average of about 15–16 such events annually. Trader consensus favoring the 14–16 bin reflects this baseline rate, driven by ongoing activity along the Pacific Ring of Fire, including recent M7.7 and M7.4 events in Indonesia and Colombia plus earlier shocks in the Philippines, Venezuela, and Mexico. The closely matched 17–19 outcome incorporates natural year-to-year variability and potential for clustering in subduction zones, while lower probabilities for 20+ or sub-14 totals acknowledge the rarity of extreme deviations and the absence of unusual seismic indicators in current USGS data. Remaining months will hinge on updated monitoring and any new large events in high-activity regions.
