Abdul El-Sayed secured the Democratic nomination in Michigan’s open U.S. Senate race after a narrow August 4 primary victory over Rep. Haley Stevens, including a decisive win in Kent County that demonstrated strong progressive support in the Grand Rapids area. Mike Rogers advanced unopposed as the Republican nominee. Statewide polling in late August showed El-Sayed holding a slim lead or statistical tie, with traders assigning him an 81.5% implied probability of carrying Kent County on November 3. This positioning reflects El-Sayed’s primary margins in western population centers, his appeal among younger and minority voters, and the county’s evolving demographics, while Rogers’ historical strength in the region and comments highlighting challenges for progressives in west Michigan keep his odds at 13.5%. Minor candidates and “other” remain at 50% amid limited differentiation.
