The Hualien County magistrate race remains tightly contested ahead of Taiwan’s November 28, 2026 local elections, with trader consensus reflecting a crowded field and limited separation among contenders. The Kuomintang’s March 2026 nomination of Ji’an township head Yu Shu-chen followed internal competition aimed at reducing Fu Kun-chi’s local influence, while term limits bar the incumbent from seeking re-election. Multiple party members, aligned independents, and potential Democratic Progressive Party or other challengers continue to signal interest, sustaining uncertainty over vote consolidation and turnout patterns. Recent KMT candidate rallies and ongoing registration timelines have not yet produced decisive polling shifts or endorsements that would favor any single name. Developments such as formal party endorsements, candidate withdrawals, or early campaign momentum could begin to differentiate probabilities in the coming months.
