Dune: Part Three leads the early trader consensus for the 2027 Best Visual Effects Oscar due to the franchise’s proven track record in delivering sweeping, technically ambitious desert and space sequences under Denis Villeneuve. The film’s scale, combined with Warner Bros.’ marketing push, gives it slight frontrunner status at 50.5% implied probability. However, the field remains tightly competitive, with dozens of outcomes clustered near 50% and Project Hail Mary, The Odyssey, and Godzilla Minus Zero trailing at 21.5%, 9.0%, and 8.3%. Key swing factors include the balance between practical and digital work in Nolan’s The Odyssey, Takashi Yamazaki’s follow-up to the prior Godzilla winner, and the VFX demands of space-set Project Hail Mary. Most contenders have yet to screen, leaving room for late momentum shifts once footage and guild reels emerge.
