The S&P 500 trades near 7,719 as of early September 2026, up roughly 19% over the past year and within 1-2% of August highs near 7,817. Robust second-quarter earnings growth, exceeding 50% year-over-year on a headline basis with broad sector participation, has anchored the advance, driven by AI-related capital expenditures in semiconductors, data centers, and infrastructure. Upward revisions to full-year 2026 EPS estimates reflect this momentum alongside one-time gains. Counterbalancing forces include the 10-year Treasury yield holding above 4.8%, persistent inflation near 3.4%, and the Federal Reserve’s decision to maintain the federal funds target at 3.50-3.75% under Chair Kevin Warsh, with the September 15-16 FOMC meeting and upcoming CPI data likely to shape near-term sentiment and implied probabilities for monthly closing levels.
