Recent August PPI data, showing a 5.4% YoY rise slightly above the 5.3% consensus and driven by a 4.2% monthly surge in final-demand energy prices, has anchored trader focus on persistent upstream cost pressures for the September reading. Elevated crude and diesel prices, combined with firm transportation and warehousing services components, suggest continued goods-led momentum, while core measures excluding food, energy, and trade services advanced 4.7% annually. Market-implied probabilities cluster tightly around 5.4–5.8% outcomes amid uncertainty over commodity volatility and base effects ahead of the mid-October release. This dynamic reflects aggregated positioning on whether energy relief or further pipeline inflation will dominate, with the upcoming CPI report and FOMC meeting providing additional context for rate-path expectations.
