Thorsten Kornblum, the incumbent SPD Oberbürgermeister since 2021, holds a commanding lead in the September 13, 2026, direct mayoral election due to his established record on local priorities including education investment, housing development, infrastructure upgrades, and public safety. The SPD's position as the largest faction in the city council reinforces his visibility and organizational support across Braunschweig. A field of eight challengers from parties including the CDU, Greens, FDP, AfD, and smaller groups fragments the opposition vote in the first round. Traders price in a likely runoff on September 27, where Kornblum's base and name recognition provide a strong edge. Potential shifts could stem from unusually high turnout favoring challengers or unforeseen late developments, though structural advantages make such outcomes improbable based on current positioning.
