Brazil’s Copom is expected to cut the Selic rate by 25 basis points to 13.75% at its September 15-16 meeting, with market-implied odds exceeding 97%. The primary driver is the August IPCA inflation print of 4.22% year-over-year—below consensus and accompanied by a 0.32% monthly deflation—that extended the cooling trend and kept readings comfortably inside the 1.5-4.5% target band. This follows four consecutive 25-basis-point reductions since March, leaving the policy rate at 14% amid moderating economic activity and a still-resilient labor market. Analyst surveys, including the Focus median, align on another measured easing step while highlighting that inflation expectations remain above the 3% target, preserving the case for a cautious, data-dependent approach. Upside surprises in services prices or renewed external pressures could still alter the near-term path.
