Recent softening in U.S. economic data has weighed on the dollar, with the DXY trading near 98.8 as of August 21 after a roughly 0.8-1% weekly decline and a pullback from the 100-101 area seen earlier in the summer. Persistent inflation above the Fed’s 2% target, with core PCE near 3.3% year-over-year, has sustained a hawkish policy tilt, evidenced by the 9-3 July FOMC vote to hold the federal funds rate at 3.50-3.75% and minutes indicating several officials favored tightening. Market-implied odds for a September hike have moderated to the 30-45% range amid softer employment and consumption prints. Key upcoming releases during the week of August 24, including the July PCE deflator, second-quarter GDP revision, durable goods orders, and consumer confidence, alongside potential Jackson Hole commentary, will shape near-term rate expectations and interest-rate differentials that continue to anchor trader positioning in the index.
