Ongoing gang violence, funding shortfalls, and the need to align voter registration with a national political pact and potential constitutional referendum have kept the 2026 Haitian general election timeline under pressure. The Provisional Electoral Council postponed registration in April 2026 with no revised dates issued, following earlier adjustments to the August 30 first-round target amid security concerns that limit access to polling areas. Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé has signaled intent to complete voting before year-end to meet the February 2027 transition deadline, while hundreds of political groups have registered and some public funds have been allocated. These competing pressures—persistent insecurity versus incremental logistical steps—produce the narrow trader split, with further security setbacks or unresolved pact disputes likely to favor additional postponements and any confirmed progress on registration or stabilized conditions supporting the current schedule.
