Recent preliminary University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment data at 47.8, released September 11, anchors the elevated 69% market-implied probability on the 46.0–48.9 range for the final September 2026 print. Persistent cost-of-living pressures, including a resurgence in gasoline and diesel prices to multi-year highs and renewed trade tensions, drove the month-over-month drop from 51.7 in August while pushing one-year inflation expectations to 4.6%, the highest since June. The expectations sub-index fell sharply to 45.8, reflecting weaker outlooks for personal finances and business conditions, even as the current-conditions gauge held relatively steady near 50.9. Broader context includes above-target CPI readings near 3.4% and shifting Fed rate-hike expectations, with traders assigning lower odds to outcomes above 52 amid these headwinds. The final release later this month will determine whether revisions alter the current clustering.
