Helen Zille, the Democratic Alliance candidate, leads trader pricing in the Johannesburg mayoral market amid the upcoming 2026 municipal elections, reflecting her early campaign launch, high visibility stunts on service delivery failures, and polling support around 39 percent. The proportional representation system and history of coalition governments mean no single party is expected to secure an outright majority on the city council, keeping outcomes dependent on post-election negotiations. The ANC has yet to confirm its nominee from reported contenders including Frank Chikane, while other parties field candidates such as Herman Mashaba of ActionSA, maintaining a fragmented field. Recent registration drives and manifesto launches continue to shape positioning ahead of the vote.
