Israeli forces have maintained a ground presence in southern Lebanon since the March 2026 escalation of the Hezbollah conflict, conducting targeted airstrikes on Beirut's southern suburbs and other Hezbollah-linked sites while advancing limited operations near the border. Recent developments include the August 5, 2026 killing of two Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon, which prompted immediate IDF retaliatory strikes, alongside a seventh round of U.S.-mediated talks in Rome focused on pilot zones for phased withdrawals conditioned on Hezbollah disarmament—a demand the group has repeatedly rejected. Israeli officials have stated that full disengagement requires verified changes to Hezbollah's military posture, leaving open the possibility of deeper incursions if negotiations stall or threats intensify. Ongoing diplomatic efforts and periodic cross-border incidents remain the key variables influencing assessments of any near-term entry into Beirut proper.
