South Korea's EWY ETF, heavily weighted toward semiconductors with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix comprising roughly half the portfolio, has seen its price action dominated by AI memory-chip demand and global risk sentiment. The KOSPI's sharp August rebound—fueled by record EWY inflows exceeding $6 billion in recent weeks, U.S. Treasury bond buybacks that eased yields, and upward earnings revisions—pushed the ETF near $180 before a 3% KOSPI drop on August 24 amid Samsung's shareholder-return disappointment and foreign outflows. With 2026 YTD gains exceeding 80% and elevated volatility tied to memory pricing and Bank of Korea policy, the week hinges on chip-sector momentum and any fresh U.S. inflation or rate signals.
