Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, including disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz and renewed Iran-related conflicts, have driven sharp swings in crude oil prices over recent months, with benchmarks spiking as high as $105 per barrel in July 2026 before easing. West Texas Intermediate crude currently trades near $82–85 per barrel, well below its 2008 all-time high of $147, amid recovering supplies from the Gulf, elevated global inventories, and softer demand signals particularly from Asia. Analysts project Brent averaging around $85 per barrel in the third quarter before declining toward $78–80 by year-end, reflecting rebalancing through inventory draws and potential OPEC+ adjustments. Key upcoming catalysts include further diplomatic developments on sanctions, EIA inventory reports, and FOMC policy signals that could influence dollar strength and risk appetite in energy markets.
