The 2026 South African local government elections, scheduled for November, have produced a fragmented field for Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality mayor, with traders assigning roughly equal implied probabilities across more than two dozen named contenders and an "other" option. Recent party announcements—such as the EFF naming Mkhululi Dlevu and the UDM selecting Nqabayomzi Kwankwa—have kept the contest open, while the ANC continues internal candidate vetting amid repeated leadership changes and service-delivery challenges in the Eastern Cape metro. No single candidate or party has consolidated a clear path to an outright majority, reflecting historical patterns of coalition negotiations and shifting voter blocs in municipal races. Upcoming candidate unveilings, registration deadlines, and campaign events over the next weeks could shift positioning by clarifying alliances or highlighting governance records.
