Andy Burnham’s debut PMQs on 2 September highlighted his emphasis on fiscal responsibility amid surging UK borrowing costs, with the new prime minister refusing to rule out further tax changes or borrowing ahead of the October budget while blaming the prior Conservative government’s record. He highlighted cost-of-living measures such as removing VAT from electricity bills and stressed defence funding plans, deflecting direct questions from Kemi Badenoch on spending cuts. His collaborative “new politics” tone quickly gave way to standard partisan exchanges. With the next PMQs approaching and markets sensitive to any signals on the autumn fiscal statement, traders are watching for updates on welfare reform, regional devolution, or economic headroom.
