Recent August CPI data, showing a 0.4% month-over-month headline increase driven primarily by a nearly 4% surge in gasoline prices amid elevated oil costs from geopolitical tensions, has anchored trader expectations for September. Persistent energy pressures and supply disruptions continue to elevate pipeline inflation, with the Cleveland Fed’s September nowcast implying headline CPI near 3.43% year-over-year. Consumer inflation expectations have also risen sharply, reaching 4.6% for the year ahead in early September surveys, reflecting broader price momentum beyond shelter and core services. These factors position a 0.5% monthly print as the consensus outcome at 39.5% implied probability, followed by 0.4%, while the September 11 release and upcoming October 14 report keep near-term data sensitivity elevated for monetary policy positioning.
