The trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the only person ever charged in Tupac Shakur’s 1996 drive-by killing, opened in Las Vegas this week with prosecutors framing him as the “on-ground commander” who supplied the gun and ordered the hit in retaliation for the MGM Grand beating of his nephew. Key momentum for the 64.5% implied probability on conviction stems from Davis’s own 2019 memoir and multiple interviews in which he detailed his role, statements prosecutors call the case’s centerpiece even though he did not fire the weapon. Defense counsel immediately labeled the narrative fiction and questioned why charges waited decades, while noting many eyewitnesses are deceased. With the trial expected to run four to six weeks and jury selection recently completed, traders are pricing in the strength of the self-incriminating evidence against the challenges of proving gang-related murder after so long, making the outcome a live test of how much weight a Las Vegas jury gives to the defendant’s prior admissions versus later denials.
