The next Hannover mayoral election is scheduled to be held on September 13, 2026, to elect the mayor of Hannover, Germany (Oberbürgermeister der Landeshauptstadt Hannover). A runoff election is scheduled for September 27, 2026, if no candidate receives more than half of the valid votes in the first round. This market will resolve according to the candidate who becomes the next mayor of Hannover as a result of this election. Temporary, interim, or placeholder mayors appointed before the election will not be considered. If the result of this election isn't known by April 30, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, the market will resolve to “Other.” The primary resolution source for this market will be a consensus of credible reporting; however, if there is any ambiguity in the results, this market will resolve according to official information from the Landeshauptstadt Hannover, including its election office and municipal election committee.Belit Onay, the incumbent Green Party Oberbürgermeister of Hannover seeking a second term on September 13, 2026, holds a commanding position in trader consensus due to his established record on climate neutrality targets, inner-city redevelopment, and mobility transition policies such as expanded cycling infrastructure. Late-August Forsa polling placed him at approximately 40 percent support, well ahead of SPD challenger and city treasurer Axel von der Ohe and CDU candidate Peter Karst, both around 20 percent, with other contenders in single digits. Recent investigations into the SPD-linked affair and scrutiny of the CDU candidate have further weakened opponents ahead of the first-round vote, which partial results indicate Onay leads without an outright majority. A potential September 27 runoff remains possible, though traders view late shifts from scandals, turnout variations, or regional economic pressures like the VW situation as unlikely to overcome his structural advantages.
