Gérard Larcher’s strong position as incumbent Senate president since 2014, backed by the stable LR-UC majority in the upper chamber, underpins the high implied probability of reelection following the September 27, 2026, partial renewal. He has openly sought a new three-year term, emphasizing unity within the center-right bloc and his role in budget negotiations with the government. Recent reporting shows no organized opposition or alternative candidate gaining traction among senators, while Larcher continues active engagement, including support for LR candidates in the ongoing elections and meetings with Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu. The Senate’s indirect electoral college and entrenched group dynamics have historically favored continuity in this leadership post, with limited shifts expected from the current vote.
