Sanae Takaichi assumed office as Japan's first female prime minister in October 2025 after winning the Liberal Democratic Party leadership, then consolidated power through a February 2026 snap election that delivered the LDP a supermajority exceeding two-thirds of lower house seats. This parliamentary strength has enabled her administration to advance policy priorities on national security, economic growth, and constitutional issues with minimal legislative obstruction. Recent press engagements through mid-August 2026, including responses to diplomatic developments, indicate continued active governance. While approval ratings declined from the 60-70% range earlier in the year to the low-to-mid 50s or lower in July polls amid inflation pressures, the figures remain well above historical thresholds that typically trigger leadership challenges, and no credible opposition momentum or internal party revolt has emerged. Traders therefore price a high probability she completes the year in office.
