Japan’s 10-year government bond yield, recently trading near 2.98-3.00%, faces upward pressure from the Bank of Japan’s rapid policy normalization amid sticky inflation. With the policy rate already at 1% after the June hike and markets pricing a move to 1.25% at the September 17-18 meeting, traders anticipate further tightening to address upside risks from elevated oil prices, a weaker yen, and AI-driven demand. Record fiscal budget requests under Prime Minister Takaichi add to concerns over supply and debt servicing, while rising U.S. Treasury yields amplify global repricing. These factors underpin the 65.8% market-implied probability of the yield finishing 2026 above 3%, consistent with the ongoing shift from ultra-accommodative conditions.
