Recent August 2026 CPI data printed at 3.4% year-over-year with a 0.4% monthly gain, driven by a 3.9% surge in gasoline prices amid elevated energy costs tied to geopolitical tensions. The Cleveland Fed’s nowcast for September stands at 3.43%, while University of Michigan surveys show one-year inflation expectations jumping to 4.6%. These factors underpin trader focus on 3.5% and 3.6% outcomes, which together command nearly 60% implied probability. Core measures remain softer near 2.4%, yet persistent shelter and services pressures, alongside the upcoming September 15–16 FOMC meeting and October 14 CPI release, keep the distribution tightly clustered around current levels with limited room for sharp downside surprises.
