Recent August CPI data showed a 0.4% monthly headline gain driven by a 3.9% surge in gasoline prices amid Middle East supply disruptions and higher energy costs, with core rising 0.3%. Trader sentiment for September reflects similar crosscurrents, including sustained fuel-price pressure, shelter costs, and potential tariff or AI-related pass-through effects that could support readings near 0.5% or 0.4%. Elevated consumer inflation expectations at 4.6% and the upcoming October 14 release add uncertainty, while any moderation in energy or goods deflation could tilt outcomes lower. These factors keep the two leading probabilities closely matched, underscoring the data-dependent path for monetary policy expectations.
